It's hard enough to make yourself stand out at a trade show. You have to get the right location, the right booth and the right presentation. The final piece of the trade show puzzle, and perhaps the most important, are your promotional giveaways. Giveaways travel throughout the trade show floor, and are an excellent tool to stimulate prospects to come to you. This year, choose something buzz-worthy to increase your success at meeting customers and developing new relationships at trade shows.
Think back to the trade shows you have visited in the past, what types of items made a buzz? What make you turn your head? At every show, there are always several items that everyone wants. Unique and interesting promotional items tend to drive foot traffic in your direction and generate buzz about you.
A few examples of creative solutions:
If you are at a trade show to introduce a high dollar product, it makes sense to offer something of a little more perceived value. Customized USB keys have come down in price significantly, and can be a must-have item. Considering the higher dollar value of these items, you might want to make some sort of registration required to receive a gift. Custom, higher-end office supplies such as pens, organizers, and desktop cell phone holders also work well for this type of giveaway as well.
If you are at a show trying to promote your brand name, you would want to make sure that the gift has something to do with your brand. For instance, if you are a technology company, it might make sense to offer something gadgety, such as a usb coffee warmer. A security company could offer a custom padlock. It also makes sense, in these cases especially, to not only brand the item, but to put a brand-reaffirming slogan on it as well. The possibilities for different types of industry-specific items and customization are virtually limitless.
Contests also work well for capturing contact information as well. For instance, you could offer several customized digital photo frames, noise canceling headphones, or ipods that people could sign up to win. These hot items will certainly generate a lot of interest on your part.
Just match your giveaway to your target audience and your brand for success. Above all, don't just hand them out, say thanks, and walk away. Use the item to open a dialogue, and move on to capturing lead information. Implement a plan to open new dialogs and some way to measure success, like how many new contacts you bring home, or how many brochures you hand out.
You have to remember that the people who walk around these shows see possibly hundreds of booths in a single day. There is no reason to assume they will remember yours .A creative and interesting promotional item can go a long ways towards not only helping you get attention, but to help your client remember you after the fact, and can serve to bridge the gap towards a long and fruitful business relationship.
